Griezmann cancels Huawei deal to co-operate in the persecution of Uighur Muslims
France's World Cup-winning footballer Antoya Griezmann has canceled a deal with telecom company Huawei for allegedly cooperating in the persecution of China's Uyghur Muslims.
The forward, who plays for Spanish club Barcelona, confirmed the matter on his Instagram account on Thursday.
"I immediately decided to cancel my contract with Huawei after learning of the allegations against Huawei for its use of facial recognition software to persecute the Uighur Muslim minority," Griezmann wrote.
Huawei is involved in identifying Uyghurs by looking at them in China, a US-based research firm said in a report on Tuesday. As soon as the Uighur minority is identified through this software, a warning goes to the police of the country.
China has come under fire from around the world since the US report was released. Human rights groups say at least one million Uighurs, most of them Muslims, are living in inhumane conditions and are constantly being persecuted by the government.
Griezmann, who played a key role in helping France win the World Cup in 2016, was named Huawei's brand ambassador in 2016.
